A new report by think tank and consultancy NPC explores the nature of digital and financial exclusion in the UK today. The report builds a picture of drivers of digital exclusion and how it affects different groups within society. Commissioned by the Santander Foundation, the report also explores potential responses to these issues.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has reached an agreement with UK phone providers to better protect vulnerable customers as phone lines are upgraded to a new digital network. In particular, the measures will support those using personal Telecare alarms, and will ensure no one is forced to switch until new protections are in place.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, those over seventy spend the most time using a computer or other device in the UK, second only to those in their 20s. The ONS survey asked how different Britons spent their time. Over-70s spent considerable time browsing the web and on emails, but were the lowest social media users.
