Protection for vulnerable customers as landlines are withdrawn, and new stats on online lives of the over-70s

Digital and financial exclusion research

A new report by think tank and consultancy NPC explores the nature of digital and financial exclusion in the UK today. The report builds a picture of drivers of digital exclusion and how it affects different groups within society. Commissioned by the Santander Foundation, the report also explores potential responses to these issues.

Better protection for vulnerable customers in withdrawal of landlines

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has reached an agreement with UK phone providers to better protect vulnerable customers as phone lines are upgraded to a new digital network. In particular, the measures will support those using personal Telecare alarms, and will ensure no one is forced to switch until new protections are in place.

Over-70s are UK’s second most active online group

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, those over seventy spend the most time using a computer or other device in the UK, second only to those in their 20s. The ONS survey asked how different Britons spent their time. Over-70s spent considerable time browsing the web and on emails, but were the lowest social media users.

Elderly still more likely to be digitally excluded

This blog by Katie Heard from Good Things Foundation reconsiders the new ONS statistics in light of recent findings that 4.2 million people over 75 lack basic digital skills. Heard outlines ongoing blockers to older people when online, from confidence and motivation to access and skills.
