Digital inclusion trials in Sunderland and Essex, plus online talks at Public Sector Innovation Week in March

Advice for a new government on digital exclusion

This report lays out “three quick fixes for the first year of a new government” in tackling digital exclusion. From Careful Trouble, the research arm of social enterprise Promising Trouble, it aims to target route causes of the problem. Recommendations include improving ONS data collection and declaring internet access an essential utility.

Digital inclusion at Public Sector Innovation Week in March

Running from 11-15 March, this year’s Public Sector Innovation Week includes an array of digital inclusion talks. All talks are online and free, organised by the networking platform Digital Leaders. It includes sessions from multiple City and County Councils, Good Things Foundation, AbilityNet, and more.

New Community Digital Health Hubs in Sunderland

A pioneering project in Sunderland is creating 22 Community Digital Health Hubs. Based within the community, the hubs will provide everything from free internet access and devices to support from local volunteers. The project has secured over £580,000 in investment from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Essex trialling tool to help residents access digital support

Essex County Council is rolling out the Digital Inclusion Triage Tool to help residents identify their digital challenges and needs and find local support services. The tool, developed with support of the Local Government Association, is already used by a handful of local authorities including Worcestershire County Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Newly named Digital Inclusion APPG appoints co-chair

The Data Poverty All Party Parliamentary Group has been renamed the Digital Inclusion APPG, after the group agreed to expand its focus on the digital divide to include devices, skills, will and access. At an Extraordinary General Meeting of the group, Labour member for Sunderland Central, Julie Elliott MP took up the role of co-chair alongside Matt Warman MP.
