A new report from the Parliament research service POST looks into the motivational and personal reasons that people may have limited access to the internet or digital services. It found that disinterest was most often cited – but that this may mask other underlying factors such as a lack of skills or concerns about affordability.

How well is the public sector tackling digital exclusion in Scotland?

A new report by independent public body Audit Scotland is calling for “Clearer leadership and focus to tackle digital exclusion” across the country. The report assesses how well the public sector is tackling digital exclusion, and what more it can do. It finds that while investment in digital exclusion increased during Covid, leadership has weakened in recent years, partly driven by spending cuts.

A Digital Inclusion Charter for Scotland

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (a network of charities and voluntary groups) has published a new Digital Inclusion Charter for Scotland. Pledges include improving understanding, working in genuine partnerships and contributing to wider conversations on digital exclusion. You can sign the charter on its website.

Connected Britain Awards - shortlist announced

Councils across the UK have been shortlisted for the Connected Britain Awards, which recognise the most significant and innovative organisations, solutions and programmes that are shaping Britain’s digital future. Those up for prizes include Cornwall Council, Norfolk County Council, Trafford, Wigan and Glasgow, among others.

Virgin Media O2 launches new mobile plan to support people on low incomes

The O2 Essential Plan is available for new and existing customers who receive benefit payments such as Universal Credit or Job Seekers’ Allowance. It comes with 10GB of mobile data, and unlimited calls and texts for £10 per month. It can be taken as a 30-day rolling contract, with no activation or exit fees.
